Newcastle Slot Car Racing Club History

NSCRC was formed sometime during the 1960s, at which time the track was housed in a wooden, outbuilding attached to West End Boys club, in the West End area of Newcastle.

Then, as now, the track comprised four lanes and was built by the members. However, in those days the cars were slower and the track much twistier while the surface was painted with black 'Sandtex' in order to give grip.

'Pickup' (electical contact) was via copper tape which was contiuosly ripped up by the cars, causing delays in racing while repairs were made. Power was supplied by car batteries. (Adequate at the time)

Eventually, during the very early 70's the club was forced to close as West End Boys Club wanted the premises back for there own use. The members dissapated, either to other clubs in the region at the time or gave up entirely.

Fast forward to ?????????? when a couple of the original members decided to resurrect NSCRC. The current premises were obtained and with a lot of hard work a new track was built and new members found.

This new track followed pretty much in the vein of the original track.,(Twisty, Sandtex surface and copper pickups) albeit a completley different shape.

The club took off again and once more had a thriving membership in the second half of the 90's as it does today.

In 1999, the 'new' track had had it's day, showing serious signs of wear and tear. The cars and chassis combinations by then, were very much faster, more powerful and needed a less twisty track and a better and more consistent power supply

With the help of various local business's in the form of donations or discounts we were able to build the current track which is a thoroughly modern track, designed by member and former national champion, George Kimber.
